League Cycling Instructor Seminar

The Hawaii Bicycling League ("HBL") is extending this invitation to you or your organization to attend the League of American Bicyclists Cycling Instructor Seminar.

HBL is  partnering with Impact Hub Honolulu (458 Keawe St, Honolulu) to rent space large enough to cater for the seminar and drills.

HBL is looking for future instructors of our Adult Cycling Education Workshops and also to further the education of safe cycling techniques of prominent cyclists around Oahu and the other islands.

Here are some frequently asked questions about the LCI Seminar:

What is an LCI?
League Cycling Instructors (LCI’s) are certified to teach the League of American Bicyclists Smart Cycling Classes (these are the classes HBL moulds our adult education programs from). The goal is to help people feel more secure about getting on a bike, to create a mindset that bikes are treated as a vehicle, and to ensure people on bikes know how to ride safely and legally.

LCI’s are certified (and covered by the League of American Bicyclist’s insurance) to teach the HBL Adult Education Workshops.

What will I learn at the LCI Seminar?
The LCI training seminar focuses on teaching and demonstration techniques used with future students both on the road and in the classroom. The seminar emphasis is on how to teach bicycle safety and skills so as to provide increased comfort and confidence for new and returning bicyclists and youth.
It is primarily about teaching, and each candidate will have opportunities during the seminar to practice facilitating parts of the Adult Education curriculum.
Expect to develop and better your presentation and public speaking skills over the weekend - this is a key component of the seminar.

Why should I become an LCI?
As noted above, LCI’s are certified to teach and are covered by the League’s Insurance to teach the HBL Adult Education Workshops.
Instructors in these workshops get paid between $25 and $30 an hour.

LCI certification is a nationally recognized certification and never expires. You can teach in any State and for any organization.
You also will have the certification to teach the League of American Bicyclist’s core curriculum workshops (i.e. Traffic Skills 101) independently.

Many ride groups (especially the Red Hot Ladies) also encourage their ride leaders to be LCI certified.

This seminar will also provide you with the education of best practices in safe cycling techniques that you can apply to your own personal riding habits.

How much does this certification cost?
The LCI seminar costs $300 to attend and become certified.

HBL has received funds from the City & County of Honolulu to fully sponsor 10 individuals to complete this seminar.
Anyone is able to apply for one of these sponsorships, however there is a set stipulation that anyone receiving one of these scholarships must  become a regular instructor for the HBL Adult Cycling Education Workshops. See hbl.org/workshops for an idea of where and when these workshops are held.

Our aim with this seminar is to enable many people to become regular instructors for our workshops. Instructors are paid $25-$30 an hour (up to $100 for a full workshop in some instances). We are looking for a range of age-groups, from college age (even late high-school) to retired persons.

Those who do not qualify for one of these 10 scholarships will be assisted by HBL to raise money to pay for the seminar registration fees. We will be setting up a crowd funding style webpage where the public can donate to create a pool to help minimize the costs for all instructors.

What do I need to do to qualify to become an LCI?
Besides completing the Seminar, you will also be required to take Traffic Skills 101.
We will be offering this workshop with Frank Smith in the upcoming months, but it is also available online. Those interested in attending the seminar will receive more information about their options once they have registered their interest in becoming an LCI.

I’m interested, what do I need to do next?
If you are interested in becoming an LCI, please email or call Taylor (808) 735 5756 or taylor@hbl.org (email is preferred).
Please note if you are interested in becoming an instructor and applying for one of the scholarships mentioned above.
Feel free to contact me if you have any questions about the LCI Seminar or anything I haven’t addressed in this email.

Please share this with anyone from your organizations or friends who you believe would be interested in becoming League Cycling Instructors.
For our neighbor island friends, HBL will assist in finding home stays during your stay on Oahu.

More information about this seminar is available online, here: http://bikeleague.org/content/become-instructor

Looking forward to hearing from you.
Please get back to me as soon as possible to register your interest. This seminar is coming up quickly and we need to finalize participation numbers soon.
