Second Saturday Sweeps :: December
The Friends of the Path need volunteers for the December 13, 2008 Second Saturday Sweep clean up of Ke Ala Hele Makalae.
On the second Saturday of each month the Friends of the Path clean up a section of Ke Ala Hele Makalae, the path that goes by the coast. An inspection of Ke Ala Hele Makalae on Friday, November 7 turned up marine debris and litter for Friends of the Path volunteers to clean up during the November 8 Second Saturday Sweep—a net snarl, a discarded engine block, and a heavy metal box on the coast in the vicinity of the Kealia Lookout.
Five volunteers reported for duty at the regular second Saturday 8:30 AM rendezvous at Rest Pavilion #1. The five proceeded up to the Kealia Lookout in two pickup trucks & on two bicycles. With assistance from additional volunteers recruited while they were exercising on the path, the team tugged ropes attached to a hand truck to haul out the engine block and metal strongbox. With further assistance from motivated individuals in the Lookout parking lot, the engine block was hefted up a ramp into Noyes’ pickup truck.
Friends of the Path volunteers Chuck Brayer, Joshua Easterling, an unidentified visitor, Thomas Noyes, Melissa Costales, Cheryl Brayer, Brett Ishida, and Chrys Martin-Rowell removed an unsightly engine block from the coast near Ke Ala Hele Makalae's Kealia Lookout.
The net snarl, several discarded tires, and about a dozen large bags of rubbish were removed from the area. Following the usual potluck lunch back at Pavilion #1, Ishida trucked the net snarl and trash bags to the Kapaa Transfer Station for disposal while Easterling and Noyes transported a load of scrap metal to Abe's Auto Recycling in Puhi. PS&D in Lihue accepts old tires for recycling.
Friends of the Path committee chair Brett Ishida is recruiting volunteers for the December 13 Second Saturday Sweep to assure that enough Friends of the Path participate in clearing out this area to make it a day of building community pride and light work. More information on this event is available from Brett Ishida 639-4561 or through the contact us page.
This accumulation of debris on the coast about a quarter mile South of the Kealia Lookout was encountered towards the end of the November Second Saturday Sweep work session. Friends of the Path volunteers Melissa Costales and Brett Ishida decided the best approach to removing this mass is to recruit a larger work force (20 to 30 volunteers) for the next Second Saturday Sweep, coming up on December 13, 2008.
