Kauai Path Kaua'i Coastal Path

Permits issued by Planning Commission for Kaua‘i’s Ke Ala Hele Makalae 

Building a world-class bike path is no simple endeavor. The County of Kaua‘i’s been developing Ke Ala Hele Makalae, an ambitious coastal path system, for the past thirty years.

A significant milestone was just attained. The County of Kaua‘i Planning Commission voted unanimously on June 27, 2023 to approve the permits needed for a new section of Kauai’s coastal shared-use path.

When built, this approximately five mile segment of path will follow the coast on Kaua‘i’s East Side makai of the Lihu‘e Airport from Ahukini Pier and beyond the Ninini Point Lighthouse.

Attaining this milestone clears the way for the County of Kaua‘i’s Department of Public Works to advance the project to the next hurdle: securing a Conservation District Use Permit from the State of Hawai’i’s Office of Conservation & Coastal Lands.
